Harper meets the Finnish-Canadian Scene


During his September 4 visit to Sault Ste. Marie Prime Minister Stephen Harper was informed by the Finnish Honorary Consul in Sault Ste. Marie, Raimo Viitala, about the upcoming gathering of people of Finnish extraction in North America, FinnGrandFest2010. Honorary Consul Viitala told Vapaa Sana that the Prime Minister was quite aware of the fact that many residents of Northern Ontario were of Finnish heritage and that a famous Finnish hockey player came out of the North,Pentti Lund. Sault gets another major event: FinnGrandFest2010

With another major event confirmed, 2010 is sure to be a very special year for Sault Ste. Marie. The Finn Grand Fest is coming to town July 28 to Aug. 1, 2010. The event showcases an exciting mix of Finnish culture and recreation and is expected to draw around 5,000 visitors to the city. "This is just a wonderful opportunity for us," says Mayor John Rowswell. "We’re delighted to be doing this with the Finnish community." This is only the third time the festival will be hosted by a North American city. Once again, Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, a division of the SSM Economic Development Corporation, has been successful at attracting a high-profile event. "We’ve had outstanding support from the City and Economic Development Corporation," says Finn Grand Fest 2010 Chair Raimo Viitala, who’s an Honourary Consul of Finland. "They’ve all been marvelous." The 2010 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will also be hosted by Sault Ste. Marie, Tourism SSM announced last month. Other events recently hosted by the city include the 2008 World Club Ringette Championships and 2008 Frontier Adventure Races. "Sault Ste. Marie is proud of its diverse ethnic background, and FinnFest 2010 will celebrate an important part of it," says Steve Hollingshead, Coordinator of Special Events and Sport Tourism for Tourism Sault Ste. Marie. "In everything from sporting to accommodations, our city has some of the best venues in the country. This event will allow us to showcase them to the world."

Finnish Fesstival: It will be a celebration of Finnish culture and recreation when Sault Ste. Marie hosts the five day Finn Grand fest, beginning July 28, 2010.
Only the third time the celebration has been hosted in North America, organizers have expectations of drawing more than 4,000 visitors.
The tentative agenda includes theatre, concerts, lectures, dances, gala banquests, marketplaces, sporting events and spiritual programs.
The Essar Centre will be the hub for the event but activities are also planned for the John Rhodes Community Centre, Queen Elizabeth Field, the Kiwanis Community Theatre and the Bushplane Museum.

Kanadansuomalaisten mielissä ovat ensi kesän suurjuhlat Sudburyssä, mutta samallla ovat jo pitkällä 2010 yhteis-pohjois-amerikkalaisen Grand FinnFestin valmistelut. Lomas yhteinen juhla pidetään rajan pinnassa Sault Ste Mariessa heinä elokuun vaihteesa 2010.
Joulukuussa oivat Sault Ste Mariessa koolla paikallinen toimikunta sekä FinnFest USA:n ja Kanadan Suomalaisen Kultturiliiton edustajat.
Vieraille esiteltiin ehdolla olevia tapahtumapaikkoja mm torille ja konserteille. Pääjuhlalle oli tarjolla kaksikin suurta salia.
Tapahtumakiinteistöissä on usein mm siellä pysyvästi olevien yrittäjien asettamia rajoituksia. Ollaanko esimerkiksi paikallisella Essar C.trellä sikäläisten toimiuvanhaltijoiden lupien varassa? Ei olla, vakuuttivat kaupungin edustajat.
Torontolaiset professorit Vähämäki ja Linström suunnittelevat luento- ohjelmistoa. Suomalaistapahtumia toisinaan vaivannut luentojen epätaisuus on vaikeasti ennakoitvissa, mutta tällä asiantuntemuksella yleisö voinee luottaa saavans luennoista tietoja ja arvokkaita kokemuksia eikä päähänpinttymiä tai ennakkoluuloja.
Useammassakin suujuhlassa on törmätty siihen, että suomalaistapahtumalle tarpellista ruokatarjoilua tai muuta palvelua ei ole voitu järjestää, koska toimiluvanhaltijoiden tiloja ei ole saatu käyttää. Eli kaikki on sovittava varman päälle.
Sault Ste Mariessa järjestettiin viimeksi Kanadansuomalaisten Suurjuhlat 90-luvun puolivälissä. JN

The Finnish Community of Sault Ste. Marie


The first Finns arrived in Sault Ste. Marie in the mid 1880's to work on the Sault Canal. Many of these individuals moved up from the United States which already had a lengthy history of Finnish settlement in the Upper Peninsula.
New immigrating Finns moved to the area to work in the bush camps and the forestry industry of Algoma. As homestead land became available, many settled permanently in the area and raised their families. With increasing Finnish population of the area, Finnish communities and organizations started to form. The St. Mary's Finnish Lutheran Congregation was one of the most significant organizations, being founded in 1905. Finnish halls became central gathering places for Finns and provided cultural and sporting activities. It has been said that in Bruce Mines, just east of Sault Ste.Marie, there were eight dances scheduled at the Finn Halls in a one week period. With new waves of immigration, and work available in forestry and the steel industry, the Sault attracted immigrants in increasing numbers and soon became one of the larger Finnish communities in Ontario.
According to the 2001 Census, 3,180 respondents in Sault Ste. Marie, reported Finnish ethnic origin. The following are some of the Finnish organizations which were established in the Sault and many are still quite active and vibrant to-day:

The Finnish organizations celebrate Finnish Independence Day annually and jointly plan the festivities involved.
The Finnish Canadian Grand Festival has been held in Sault Ste. Marie since 1949, on a total of eleven occasions.

Suurfestivaali lähestyy

Vuonna 2010 Sault Ste. Mariessa järjestettävää Finnish Grand Festival-tapahtumaa suunnitellan jo täyttä häkää.

Suomalaisin, kanadalaisin ja amerikkalaisin yhteisvoimin joka viides vuosi järjestettävät Finnish Grand Festivalit pidetään ensi vuonna Superior-järven toisella laidalla Sault Ste. Mariessa 28.7-1.8.2010. Suurfestivaali tulee olemaan kolmas lajissaan. Aikasemmat tapahtumat pidettiin vuonna 2005 Marquettessa Michiganissa ja vuonna 2000 Torontossa.
Järjestelytoimiskunnan puheenjohtaja Raimo Viitala kertoo juhlien suunnittelun olevan jo kovaa vauhtia käynnissä.
”Juhlat järjestetään vuorotellen Yhdysvaltain ja Kanadan puolella. Anomukset oli laitettava sisään jo kolme vuotta sitten. Tapahtuma on kaksikielinen, ja ojhelmasta on tulossa erittäin monipuolinen.”
Viitalan mukaan valmistelupuuhissa on tällä hetkellämukana noin 60 vapaaehtoista.
”Ohjelmaa on valmistelemassa 18 komiteaa. Yhteensä vappaaehtoisia tarvitaan pari kolmesataa”, puheenjohtaja arvelee.
Luvassa eukonkantoa ja saappaanheittoa. Viisipäiväisten juhlien ohjelmistossa tulee olemaan muun muassa urheilua, esityksiä, teatteria, tansseja, luentoja ja hengellistä ohjelmaa.
”Luentoja on luvassa paljon, 60-100 kappaletta. Niitä ovat järjestämässä professorit Varpu Lindström ja Börje Vähämäki Torontosta”, Viitala kertoo.
Lisäksi suurfestivaalilla pääsee tekemään ostoksia torille ja siellä järjestetään ennakkotietojen mukaan eukonkantoa, saappaanheittoa ja kansanmusiikkia. Myös lapsille on ohjelmaa.
Viitala odottaa juhlille runsaasti kävijöitä. Hän arvelee vierailijoiden tulevan tasapuolisesti molemmilta puolin rajaa.
”Sault Ste. Marie on keskellä suomalaisyhteisöjä, joten ympäriltä voi tulla suuriakin porukoita, yhteensä ehkä 5,000-6,000 vierasta. Varsinkin Michiganista mukaan saattaa tulla vanhempaakin siirtolaispolvea.
